A Dog Life Jacket Saves Dogs Lives
Many, many dogs drown every year – the exact statistics are not known. To lose your dog is tragic and heart-breaking enough howsoever it happens but how would you feel if you knew you could have almost certainly saved your dog’s life by preventing drowning? I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself. It is quite simple to minimize the risk of drowning by making sure your dog is wearing a dog life jacket.
When Do Dogs Need Dog Life Jackets?
The only answer is whenever your dog is near to water or in it!
(Except the bath!)
Dogs who swim or play/walk near water require dog life vests even more so if:
your dog can’t swim
your dog is a puppy
your dog is elderly
your dog is short muzzled – i.e. like a bull dog - dogs with short muzzles often have breathing problems and they have difficulty in keeping their noses above water so may inhale water into their lungs
your dog has breathing problems, epilepsy, heart problems or any other serious medical problem
your dog is small
your dog is very short haired – longer haired dog breeds have a little more buoyancy due to the weight of their coat
you have your own pool – many dogs drown in their owners pools (special pool ramps can be fitted so your dog can get out easily)
you are taking your dog on a boat
you are taking your dog near cold or icy water
On a boat, at the beach, walks along the quay and swimming - always make sure your dog is wearing a dog life vest!
Swimming is great exercise for dogs and in the hot weather going in the water can stop your dog overheating. It’s great to take your dog with you out on a boat or for a run on the beach where they can play with a Frisbee or ball in the water – my westie dog loves being any where near water – we walk along a local jetty where Dougs always tries to chase the seagulls which I used to worry about before he had his dog life vest – I was scared he was going to run after the birds and fall in the water – he can swim but the jetty goes out quite a long way from the shore and the water is very deep and can be very cold at times.
In the winter too dogs can be at risk from icy water – I live in the Lake District and walk Dougie near lakes all year round. Last January all the lakes here were frozen and it was reported on the local news that a dog had fallen in a lake (lost their footing on the ice) and the owner was restrained from going in after his dog, as it was too dangerous – sadly the dog drowned before the emergency services arrived. Dougs will wear his dog life jacket now all year round when near these lakes.
How Does a Dog Life Jacket Work?
A dog life jacket keeps the dog’s head above water by giving neck support, giving buoyancy to the dog and thereby keeping the dog afloat. The dog life jacket has handles on the top so you can easily lift your dog out of the water (or rescue services can) if you’re nearby. The dog life jackets are easily zipped on although safely designed so that your dog cannot wriggle out of it. Many dog life jackets are made in high visibility colours so that your dog can easily be seen in the water. Adjustable straps make it easy to make sure the dog life vest is fitted correctly and you have to measure for the correct size before buying one.
Which Dog Life Jacket for your dog?
When I bought Dougie’s dog life vest I did a lot of research to get the best one – I wanted high visibility, safety and a good comfortable fit and I needed to know how to measure for size which most products advertised failed to tell you (as well as a good price!).
The one that ticked all those boxes is the Outward Hound Pet Saver Life Jacket

Review of small size from one of the customer reviews at Amazon:
This vest fits him very good. We even tried it out and he acted as if he wasn't wearing it. We went to the beach and he was the talk of the group. A Pug wearing a dog life vest while running in and out of the water with the big boys. I would highly recommend this for a small dog, any dog. It has clips so he could easily be picked up without it unhooking. Like someone said "like picking up a six-pack". I like the extra floatation at the front so my Pugs' nose is kept above the water. Now, I have to remember to put it in the car whenever I take him out, just in case we come across some water for him to jump into. Thank you
Don’t risk your dog’s life in and near water – protect your best friend and give yourself peace of mind - get a dog life jacket for safe trips to the beach and fun in the water.
I feel so strongly as a dog lover about the need for a dog to wear a dog life vest that I've set up sites for the U.S. and U.K. where you can buy a dog life vest for your beloved doggie. You can get full measuring instructions on our sites too for all brands of dog life vests. We also have puppy/tiny dog (teacup size!) dog swim vests, designer dog life vests and loads of fun dog water toys for playing in the water and on the beach.

Hi excellent hub with sound and commonsense advise. Thank you for sharing.
I don't know why, but these just strike my funny bone something terrible. lol. Life jackets for dogs. I guess I just assume that all dogs are natural swimmers. :) Apparently not, and apparently there is a market for this sort of thing. Whodathunkit? :) Great stuff, even if it wasn't intended for a laugh.
This is great fun and very enjoyable! I can picture dog lovers buying life jackets for their little doggies. Ad they look so cute. I love the pic of the dog steering the boat. :)
Juliette-I really appreciate the great information on doggies life vests. I must tell you that I never even thought about this even having two dogs. You gave great information and I loved the great doggy pictures in the hub too. I especially like the one of the dog driving the boat. Too cute!!!!
I must tell my sister
This is something I must invest in. Thank you for the helpful hub. I just recently found out this last summer that our little dog loves to swim.
Juliette Morgan. Hi. You are so right, far too many dogs drown, maybe it's just lack of knowledge I am not sure.
The information in your hub is invaluable to all pet owners.
Oliver hates to get his feet wet or any part of him for that matter, but when we move it will be by the Lakes, so will be getting him fitted with a Life Jacket for sure.
His brother "Chris" goes sailing with his mum and dad every weekend, he fell in the lake once, so now if he is on the boat he has his life jacket on all the time.
This is wonderful information, thank you for sharing it with us.Hi to you and dougie from Oliver ans myself. :) :) :)
My dog loves water and is a great swimmer. Even so, I think a life jacket is a very good idea. She loves to fetch her ball. One time she scared me where I threw it in the lake and she couldn't find it. She swam and swam looking for it and ignored me for the longest time. I was afraid she would get tired out and drown. Thankfully she eventally gave up and came back to shore.
Hi juliette, I'm new to Hubpages. I took a look at your sites, REALLY cute idea with the doggie life jackets! I'll be sure to save your page, if I bump into someone that often takes their dog to beach/lake or any type of deep waters I will send people your way. Anyways I was just dropping by to introduce myself and say hi since im new here :) and would hope for you to take a look at my page! :) Take care.

What a very useful hub, and timely to me as I just bought a life jacket for my daughters fifth rescue dog, a little rat terrier - he is the best behaved of the group and so gets to go out not only sailing, but kayaking as well - now I know he will be safe - I wish more dog owners realized that if we need life jackets, so do our dogs - B.

My daughter and son-in-law have a life jacket for their little dog, Pooka. It gives both them and their dog the freedom to enjoy being in and around water and she loves to wear it. Yesterday she was in a friend's swimming pool having the time of her life. I have been promised pictures. Super hub and well laid out.
